NEDERLAND Classes in the T'ai Chi form are available at the Nederland Youth and Family Center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The cost is $60 per month, which averages to $6 per class, and the classes are taught by Sifu James Churches. People of all ages are welcome to attend. Over the years, Churches has seen students ranging in age from 6 year old to 82 attend his classes. T'ai chi ch'uan has many health benefits to body, mind and spirit. It is meditation in motion, flowing, relaxing, centering, healing, empowering. It is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, male and female, light and heavy, slow and fast, earth and sky. "We work with these energies within ourselves and around us to create a sense of harmony, peace, and yet very vibrant, alive, ready for anything. The t'ai chi form has 112 movements, all of which contain an energy flow component and a martial arts application," said Churches. Because of the deep breathing and continuous movement, t'ai chi has health benefits for anyone who values wellness, vitality and quality of life. It is very beneficial for the heart, as it opens the blood channels for complete and expansive circulation. "Several of my student over the years have started their practice as a way to redirect their life focus after a physical or emotional difficulty," he continued. "For all of us living in this hectic, stressful world, a practice like t'ai chi provides a refuge from the chaos, a place to find ourselves, in our true nature, awake and alive in the beauty and ugliness of this earth that is our home." Sifu James Churches has been practicing t'ai chi for 30 years. He can be reached at 303-258-7475, or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
