NEDERLAND "Thanks, Frank Lutz, for all you've done for the Nederland Area Seniors. To thank you we're hosting an Empty Bowls Soup Supper at TEENS, Inc. Please come. And oh, by the way, bring your wet suit! I'm serious." Combined with the Empty Bowls Soup Supper at TEENS, Inc. on February 9th, the Nederland Area Seniors are going to roast Frank Lutz. A "roast" is like bad news/good news, or is horror/honor? Frank, along with his wife Susan, have given hundreds of hours of volunteer service to begin and direct the course of the Nederland Area Seniors program. With the end of Frank's four years of service as NAS Board President and Past President he's agreed to be roasted at our Empty Bowls Soup Supper. And, because the purpose of the event is to raise money to fight hunger, Frank has agreed that a lucky prize winner can heave a sopping wet sponge at him. Chances to throw the sponge will be sold at three chances for five dollars. Proceeds will go to the Nederland Food Pantry. Frank and Susan will be thanked for their years of service with an empty bowl donated by Eldora potter, Laura Fisher. The Empty Bowls Soup Supper also includes Carousel Musical Chairs. The stop and go of carousel music will give all in attendance a chance to revisit the game of musical chairs and bring back those memories of two finalists fighting over the last remaining chair. The Empty Bowls Soup Supper includes this game of Carousel Musical Chairs as a way to contribute to the mission of the Carousel and to broaden community involvement in the Soup Supper. NAS member Pat Everson has donated a framed print of the Nederland covered bridge to be given the winner of Carousel Musical Chairs. Ten dollars buys a chair for the game and a portion of the proceeds will be given to the Carousel of Happiness. The Empty Bowls Project is known to many people as it is an international project that began in 1990. With the simple goal of heightening awareness of hunger and lending its name to local events, Empty Bowls has raised thousands of dollars for food pantries and soup kitchens. Locally, it has taken a year of gathering, painting and glazing the bowls to be given with the soup at the end of the Empty Bowls Supper. Bowls have come from as far away as Leadville and Casper, Wyoming, to be finished and glazed by Nederland Area Seniors. With the help of the third grade class at Nederland Elementary School and art teacher Jessica Moon Bernstein, the bowls will be hot out of the firing in time to be filled with homemade soups. Another contributor is Lois Harris, long time area resident and member of NAS. Just in time to prepare the soups (one vegetarian) TEENS, Inc. has a new stove! What better way to initiative the new stove than to host a community soup supper? The youth at TEENS, Inc. will assist the Nederland Area Seniors in hosting the Empty Bowls Soup Supper in their building. Moving tables and chairs and displaying ceramic bowls that go home from the meal are examples of the help gratefully accepted by the Seniors. Six dollars is all that will be charged for three expertly prepared soups, and includes bread and a drink. The event, February 9th, at 6:00 PM, at TEENS, Inc. is supported by Boulder County Aging Services Division Create Our Future Funds and proceeds will benefit the Nederland Food Pantry. Empty Bowls Project is an international effort to heighten the awareness of hunger and lends its name to events like this to raise local funds for local needs. Tickets for the empty bowls soup supper, Frank Lutz roast, and carousel musical chairs may be purchased from Nederland Area Seniors, calling 303-258-0799, or contacting the project leader, Jan Tafoya, at 303-258-9236. |
